I’ve been requested a lot of times to post this image - so it's about time I did. Anybody who has bought "Bold Visions" will be familiar with this piece “Theatre”. It is a video game concept, the area depicted ended up being on fire in the game, but the basic ideas of the setting are underpinned here.

It is amazing what a little time and inclination can do for ones creativity - I've managed to do 3 images in the last 3 lunchtimes (with a little tinkering at night). This one is different again - "Junker barges bring God knows what to God knows where"

This image took a couple of hours or so again - probably about 120-130 mins, just because I was messing with the atmosphere etc – kinda fun to paint, I love the idea of old boat like craft that defy gravity, but somehow need sails and smoke pluming engines to move about!

Orbit - Redux

This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.

“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”
Painted in Adobe PS CS3
Wacom Intous 3 Tablet
Original res 5k wide
About 20-22 hour work.

It’s been a while since I have been able to post (or paint) anything so I thought I would put up some concepts I worked up a while back for a (unnamed at present) video game project. The environments were intended to be very high saturation, yet dramatic, with the different areas being distinguished by elemental based look and feel. For instance there are a number of “Fire Dungeon” images here and a couple from the potential other areas (although this is the extent of my work on the project)
The characters (where used) were really there only for scale and proportion. I’m not a big fan of character design so I just threw these in to give a feel.
Rather than fast moving shots for this campaign, I've started with a menacing
looking environment with the car sitting in it.
To create this image I had to take a pretty low res web image of the car (as
none of these have arrived in the UK as yet) and scale it up 300% to start
work. Re-detailing, re-lighting and adding features and options the car
took quite some time. The background is to represent the rather serious
nature of this cars performance. 400 BHP - 0-100mph 9.5 seconds.

Project Type-25

These three images were commissioned by a car modification company around 12 months ago. They were engineering a hybrid Subaru Impreza called the “Type-25” which to cut a long story short was a pretty scary car.
www.type-25.com
What they needed were some marketing images, I suggested that we show the car in different settings and from different angles to show off its dynamic intentions. Rather than fly the car out to different locations around the world, I painted Hyper-real backdrops and gave the car motion from two studio photographs and an action track day shot.
The images were created to fairly limited timescales, taking about 5-6 hours each, which kind of suited the rough, limited brush stroke feel to the backgrounds – the images were all 5k wide (for print purposes).
“TOYKO” - shows the car running down a Japanese high street
“YOKOHAMA” – illustrates the car stretching its legs on the Tokyo to Yokohama highway.
“NEVADA” – Shows the car in a different environment – throwing up dust and dirt at good old sunset.

I've been doing a lot of work recently that I can't show (which is always a downer) and a lot of other work cramming to finish off a major project which is eating into my art time!
This is a concept image illustrating an area with such enormous vegetation that people can actually walk under the roots of the larger trees. I always loved the look of "A Bugs life" when they turned mere blades of grass into glowing cathedral-like ceilings and the like; I've just made the foliage larger rather than the characters smaller.

A second image for the new 2006 model of the Subaru Hybrid "Type-25" Impreza.
This image shows the car moving over a lava and dust ridden environment. I can’t believe how much trouble the colour of the car gave me in getting it to look cool/super-real and still recognisable. Black is an absolute nightmare, even more so if you only take a couple of quick snaps of the car as reference… That being said, I’m quite satisfied with the outcome, the background looks dirty enough without impinging on the car too much. I just wish I could keep a black car that clean!
Image size - 3.7k wide.
